Our History
Tremont, Illinois was incorporated in 1834 and became an early and important settlement in Tazewell County due to its location along historical routes and its fertile soil, which attracted farmers and settlers looking for new opportunities. Prominent figures Josiah James and J.H. Harris laid out the village and constructed a school house and church. William Sampson served as the first postmaster in 1835. Sampson, James, and Harris are all still street names in the village today.
Throughout the 19th and into the 20th century, Tremont flourished as a small but vibrant community, with agriculture playing a central role in its economy and way of life. Tremont gained historical significance for hosting one of the circuit court sessions where Abraham Lincoln, before becoming president, practiced law, highlighting its importance in the legal and social fabric of the region during that era.
Over the years, Tremont has managed to retain its charming small-town feel while adapting to changes in society and the economy. While still primarily agriculture-focused, many new small businesses and large employers like Precision Planting, call Tremont home. The community’s strong sense of identity and history is celebrated through events like the Tremont Turkey Festival, which brings together residents and visitors in a display of community spirit and pride. Today, Tremont stands as a testament to the enduring values of community and tradition, nestled within the heart of Central Illinois.
